Fees Assistance and Scholarships
Fees assistance at the Maynard takes two forms: means-tested bursaries (which are based on parental income), and scholarships, which are awarded to girls who are academically exceptional, have particular talents in music, sport, art, or are all-rounders who contribute significantly to School life.
Means-Tested Support
Governors’ Bursaries
The Maynard School has a long tradition of offering top-class education to girls regardless of parental income. When the Government withdrew the Assisted Places Scheme in 1997, the Maynard Governors created their own scheme to assist girls whose families would otherwise find it impossible to meet full fees. The number of bursaries is limited, but parents on low incomes are strongly urged to apply. The amount of assistance offered is calculated on parental income and the usual maximum possible is 45% of the school fees. The Governors’ Bursaries are means-tested, so applicants will be asked to submit evidence of income, and this will be reviewed annually.
External Sources of Means-Tested Support
There are a number of charities that provide help with school fees for those in difficult circumstances or on low incomes. Additionally, the Government now offers all students who stay in education after their GCSE year the opportunity to apply for the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). Please contact the Admissions team if you would like more information.
Sixth Form Science Scholarship
Although referred to as a Scholarship, this award is in fact means-tested support offered to talented science students from the state sector wishing to study for their A-levels at an independent school. The award is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Ogden Trust, whose aim is to sponsor students of outstanding scientific ability who wish to study Physics and Maths in the sixth form, and to read Physics at University. The Scholarship is worth up to 100% of fees, depending on parental income, and students wishing to apply need to meet the criteria laid down by the Ogden Trust (please visit www.ogdentrust.com for more information).
Maynard Scholarships
The Maynard offers a number of scholarships, to which the following general guidelines always apply:
The number of scholarships is limited;
Scholarships are worth 10% of fees;
Applicants from low-income families can also request a means-tested bursary if further financial assistance is required;
No scholarships are available for Junior School pupils;
Scholarships are reviewed annually, and their continued award is conditional upon the scholar’s conduct and participation;
It is expected that awards made to pupils in the Senior School (Years 7 to 11) will be valid until the end of Year 11, with students having to re-apply for a Sixth Form Scholarship.
Sixth Form Scholarships are valid for both years of the sixth form, but, again, are subject to annual review.
In addition to the 10% fee reduction, Sixth Form scholars can apply for further funding (of up to £150 per year) to permit them, collectively or individually, to participate in at least one event or activity per year related to their subject (such as an exhibition or conference)
The following Scholarships available are:
Senior School (Years 7-11)
Academic Scholarships
Academic Scholarships are awarded at the Governors’ discretion to girls who achieve an outstanding overall level of performance when assessed in the entrance tests (or Year 6 Reasoning Tests for internal candidates).
Music Scholarships
Music Scholarships are awarded, following an audition, to candidates who have already achieved a good level of technical competence and musicianship, and show evidence of further potential and a lively interest in the subject.
Sixth Form
Much of the assistance we provide is to help Sixth Formers through that crucial final stage of their School career, and we provide 350th Anniversary Academic Awards to candidates who demonstrate outstanding all-round ability in academic subjects, as well as Sports Scholarships, Art Scholarships, and Walter Daw Music Scholarships. Each Sixth Form Scholar is expected to make a real contribution to the life of the school.
