Religious Studies is a fascinating, topical and challenging subject that all students at the Maynard have the opportunity to study throughout their time here.

Religious StudiesReligious Studies encourages learners to explore the world of religious belief and practice, to engage in moral and philosophical thinking and to develop an inquiring and critical approach to religious and ethical questions.

At Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9), the Religious Studies course follows a thematic approach, exploring such areas as Ultimate Questions, Rights and Responsibilities, Global Issues and Religion and Science. Through these, students develop an understanding of Christianity, as well as of other major world religions and some less well-known world views.

All students follow a Core Religious Education course in Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11). Students engage in a wide variety of learning activities, from debates and discussions to role-plays, creative writing and art, presentations and listening to guest speakers. As a non-examined subject, Core Religious Education can be flexible and responsive to the interests of the students, as well as to current affairs and developments in the world. Recent topics of study have included body image, consumerism and aspects of spirituality. In addition, an OCR GCSE in Religious Studies is offered as part of the Year 9 options process, with students studying Judaism, Christianity and Ethics.

The popular AS and A2 Religious Studies course in Philosophy and Ethics provides an opportunity for students to study, interpret and evaluate some of the key concepts, issues and arguments from the western philosophical tradition. They are introduced to key philosophical arguments about the existence of God, suffering and miracles as well as to ethical theories and their application to issues of war and sexual ethics. They can also pursue an in-depth investigation into a religious, philosophical or ethical issue of their own choice.

Religious Studies lessons, for all ages, are intellectually challenging and enjoyable! We promote interactive and experiential learning, as well as the development of the knowledge and skills the students need to think rigorously, to present informed arguments and to grow in their own understanding of the world and their place in it.
