Junior School
The best thing about the Maynard is that everyone makes you feel special
Our Junior School caters for girls aged from 7 – 11 (Years 3 – 6). Housed in its own building within the main school campus, it is very much part of The Maynard family.
There is easy access to all the Senior School facilities for specialist learning and ready interaction between the older and younger pupils. Visitors to the school often comment on the happy and vibrant atmosphere and the cheerful confidence of our pupils.
In the Junior School you will be greeted with a warm welcome and a lively, exciting atmosphere in which our youngest students flourish and develop their learning with independence and confidence. We aim to deliver lessons which stimulate curiosity and encourage a love of learning which stays with each pupil throughout the Juniors, into the Senior School and beyond.
Each class is managed by a class teacher who oversees the academic progress of each individual as well as the pastoral welfare of the group. A strong emphasis is made throughout the school on developing close, supportive groups where consideration and compassion are expected and valued alongside industry and independence. The supportive nature of the school, and those within it, is an important part of our identity.
As our pupils progress through the Junior School, they gain learning experience linked to the Senior School culminating in a transition year in Year 6, when they enjoy full Senior School status, as well as having significantly more lessons taught by specialist teachers in specialist classrooms, such as the art studios, science laboratories, textiles room, food and nutrition suite and music rooms.
Learning, of course, is not just limited to the classroom. Junior School students take part in a number of cross-curricular days each year, an outdoor education programme in each year group, and can also choose to join in with a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Our girls participate in many team sports including netball, hockey, rounders and basketball but we also foster individual pursuits such as tennis, gymnastics and dance with the hope of encouraging exercise for health as much as for competition. The girls also have the chance to take part in public speaking, art, music, cookery, drama or book clubs, amongst many others. You are as likely to find them climbing on the Moors or canoeing down the Exe as having a read in the library!
