Junior Curriculum
Our Junior School provides a happy, secure and lively environment where each young girl will flourish. We foster individuality, confidence and an enthusiasm for learning in a warm and supportive atmosphere.
The Junior School accommodates about 100 seven to eleven year old girls and has its own dedicated staff and building within the school grounds.
Students at The Maynard are encouraged to foster a love of learning that will stay with them through life. As a selective school, we have an able body of students and expect commitment to their studies as well as a sense of rigour within the curriculum. Classes are differentiated to suit the needs of individuals, with extension and support provided as appropriate and many opportunities for pupils to extend their interests outside of the classroom through project work, homework and the extra-curricular clubs on offer.
Most subjects are delivered by the class teacher with specialist staff delivering Music, PE, Science and Modern Languages, which include French from Year 4 to 5, with Spanish and German introduced in Year 6. Alongside this, there are opportunities for girls to develop a rich mixture of skills including those in Drama, Art and ICT.
Most lessons take place in the Junior School building, but as they grow up, Junior girls have increasing access to the Senior School's specialist facilities in Physical Education, Science, ICT, Food & Nutrition, Textiles, Art and Music.
Each term, we aim to support and enliven our classroom provision through trips to the excellent local facilities, such as the Saxon Roundhouse on the moors, the Science Museum @Bristol and the outdoor education centre at Exeter Quay. Similarly, visitors are always welcome at school and include Henry VIII for Year 4’s Tudor Day, the local museum’s Egyptian mummification outreach programme as well as a visit from the Wessex Life Education bus each year. Transition to Senior School
In Year 6, the girls begin their transition to the Senior School. Although remaining with one class teacher for much of the time, they receive more specialist input from Senior School staff. They also benefit from Science lessons in the laboratories and are taught in specialist areas for Art, Music, ICT, Textiles and Food & Nutrition. Specific transition days take place in order to allow the pupils to have an early taste of what to expect in the Senior School.
Girls in Year 6 remain part of the Junior School in all areas of pastoral care and involvement in Junior School activities. They receive special privileges and carry extra responsibilities as befitting pupils at the top of their Junior career. They proceed automatically to the Senior School at the age of 11 — there is no further qualifying exam.
