A Sixth Form Leadership Challenge

130 girls, including 9 Maynard Sixth Formers gathered at Badminton School in Bristol to take part in a challenge organised by Musikscool and the Girls School Association to create and produce a five track CD in as little as four hours.

Sixth Form Leadership ChallengeThe girls are striving to raise funds for Whizz Kidz, a charity started by Mike Dixon which depends entirely on support from donations, and is approaching its 20th anniversary. The aim is to help finance mobility equipment for disabled children hoping to give them greater independence.

Sixth Form Leadership ChallengeThe girls are helping to finance this by partaking in a challenge to produce and market a CD about a positive change in the aim of helping at least one of the sixteen children in the South West who are currently on the waiting list for Whizz Kidz support. This CD was composed and recorded by the girls (including a track by some of our team); the cover was designed and funds were raised.

Regional fundraiser, Ashley Westfield, said “Thanks for the support for the day. We hope we can change the life of one young wheelchair user in the South West”.

The Maynard Junior School proved they are at the forefront when it comes to promoting greener ways of living when Members of Exeter City Council attended a Go Green assembly at the Junior School on Thursday 11 November. This was to recognise the hard work the Green Team have been doing towards promoting a sustainable way of living. They also presented the girls with a cheque for £50 to promote their environmental enterprise.

The girls have been working on various green initiatives to try and improve the school environment. Members of the green team Phoebe Taylor and Anne Lancaster presented the activities they have been implementing over the course of six months which included creating posters to encourage recycling, labelling the recycling bins around the school to ensure they are always used, using monitors at home to measure how much electricity is being used and using a composter for their fruit waste. The Junior School have also all made individual environmental promises which were displayed in the Junior School Hall.

Head of Junior School, Steve Smerdon, said “We are very proud of the efforts of the girls in the Green Team who are leading the way in creating a more sustainable future for the school. Already the team are planning their next venture using the money they have won to go towards building growing beds for our own produce.

L4 Dragon’s Den Friday 6 November

Groups of girls from L4 faced the dragon’s wrath on Friday morning when they bravely presented business proposals all with one goal in mind, to raise as much money as possible for the Prince’s Trust. Million Makers: The Schools Challenge has been designed to engage students in enterprise activities whilst raising funds for The Prince’s Trust at the same time.

The Dragons which included the Headmistress Bee Hughes grilled the girls and assessed all aspects of their ideas offering them (mainly!) constructive criticism illustrating ways to improve their ideas.

Each group of girls presented two ideas to the dragons with the best idea of the two chosen as the fundraising task. The ideas were well researched and very imaginative including a car wash for the teacher’s cars, homemade Christmas stockings, and a school mural consisting of the girl’s hand prints. The Armourers Team impressed the Dragons so much that both of their ideas were chosen; house t-shirts for the girls and paying to listen to songs on Friday lunchtimes.

The girls had to use their business and marketing skills in this task, researching the target market, estimating the total estimated profit expected and presenting their ideas to a panel of judges.

Headmistress Bee Hughes said ‘I was very impressed with the girls today. Their projects were extremely well researched and presented with many interesting and innovative ideas. It is very useful for the girls to work on these valuable business skills as they can be applied in their future work life. We are very honoured to be supporting such a good cause and hope to raise as much money as possible.’

Lord Alton launches Good Citizenship Award at The Maynard School

Lord AltonRespected politician Lord Alton of Liverpool paid a visit to the Maynard School on Thursday 5 November to officially launch the newly created ‘Lord Alton Awards’ for Good Citizenship, in recognition of students’ outstanding voluntary activities and community support.

The Award forms part of the Liverpool John Moores University Roscoe Foundation for Citizenship, which involves more than 1,000 schools across the North West. The Maynard is the first school outside the North West region to be part of the scheme. The students who receive awards will be nominated by their fellow pupils for a range of activities which demonstrate effective citizenship.

In addition to the launch of the Award, senior Maynard students attended an informative talk and a question and answer session with Lord Alton to gain an insight in the world of politics.

Maynard Headmistress, Ms Bee Hughes, said, “We are continuously encouraging our students to serve the wider community in a caring, compassionate and tolerant way. This award will recognise the fantastic contributions that Maynard pupils are already making to society today and we are extremely proud to be a part of this prestigious venture.’

Reach for the Skies! A day of arts and science at the Maynard School

Reach for the skies! October 2009On Thursday 15 October Devon youngsters were invited to explore the “Space Race” via drama, visual art, maths and science in a dedicated Discovery Day at the Maynard School.

Girls aged 10 and 11 years from Devon schools visited the Maynard School to mark the 40th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s historic moonwalk. They explored themes around the Space Race ranging from the scientific, by looking at how the space landing was achieved; to the imaginative, by creating their own performance and artwork inspired by space travel. Former Maynard Pupil and space enthusiast Karla-Luise Herpoldt, who is studying Physics at Oxford helped out on the day as well as giving an inspirational talk to the girls.

Maynard Headmistress, Ms Bee Hughes, said, “Putting a man on the moon was an extraordinary scientific triumph which took immense imagination and creativity to achieve. By exploring scientific challenges in a creative way we are looking to encourage the next generation of creative thinkers and perhaps inspire these young women to make a similar visionary contribution to the world!”
