U4 Students nominated to attend Mathematics Masterclasses

Jazmine Bailey U4N and Georgina Rutter U4N have both recently been nominated to attend the Royal Institute of Great Britain Secondary Mathematics Masterclasses. This is an honourable achievement as most groups invite students on the basis of teacher recommendation and are looking for not just an aptitude in mathematics, but also a keenness and determination to explore.

The Royal Institution coordinates a UK-wide network of mathematics masterclasses and related enrichment activities. There are around 60 secondary masterclass series and related events, stretching from Aberdeen to Cornwall, reaching over 3000 students annually. The secondary masterclasses are designed to encourage, inspire and engage young people in the art and practice of mathematics. The highly interactive sessions introduce students to aspects or applications of maths which may not usually be covered in the school curriculum. Topics range from art to cryptography, not forgetting dinosaurs, mazes and paper folding! Presenters are chosen for their ability to share their insight and enthusiasm for the subject. Students get the opportunity to explore the subject for themselves within each class, either individually or in small groups, with help being on hand if needed.

The first session started on Saturday 16th January with very positive feedback from the first presenter. Both Jazmine and Georgina really enjoyed the session and are looking forward to the upcoming classes.

Top results for the Maynard in DCSF performance tables

The DCSF GCSE and A Level league tables for 2009 show The Maynard School as among the top schools in the country for points per pupil. The school gained an average GCSE points score of 512.9 per pupil, well above the national average, and it was the third highest school in Devon for A Level points, as quoted by the Express and Echo Newspaper on 14 January.

Headmistress Ms Hughes commented ‘We are continuously proud of the public examination successes of all of our students at the Maynard, and the GCSE results for 2009 were particularly pleasing. The school’s results are significantly higher than the national average and that of Devon. We continue to provide a specialist learning environment for our students, offering them every opportunity to develop their full range of skills and talents and achieve excellent results each year.’

HAITI EARTHQUAKE APPEAL WEEK

HAITI EARTHQUAKE APPEAL WEEKThe Maynard School has launched an appeal to help the victims of the Haiti Earthquake and raise awareness about natural disasters and their consequences. Students are raising money for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) through various activities, including a non-uniform day on Wednesday and the chance to bid for the job of Headmistress for the day! There have also been special assemblies and PHSE sessions where students will learn about the science behind earthquakes and other natural disasters.

So far the students have raised £2,600 for Haiti, and still counting!

Waterpolo Success

Maynard student Pip Rutter was selected and played for Devon Ladies under 16 waterpolo team last year. Her sister Georgie, who also attends the school, was also selected for Devon mixed under 15 waterpolo team, and played as 1 of only 2 girls. Pip has now been selected for the Southwest area under 17 ladies waterpolo team for the national tournament in Birmingham this February half term. Well done to both girls!

Snow Day 6th January 2010

SnowDespite the sub-zero temperatures and the school closing at lunchtime due to deteriorating weather conditions, Maynard pupils managed to make the most of the snowy weather on Wednesday morning.

The school grounds were soon full of snowmen as the girls got to work building and there was even a chance for a few snowball fights!

Any updates regarding the situation on severe weather will be placed on the website so please continue to check the homepage over the weekend.

We are confident that the Maynard will once again be recognised for being the excellent institution it is. The Final Inspection Report will be sent to parents approximately four weeks after the final visit.

You should now have received a copy of the ISI Parents’ questionnaire electronically; please let the school know if you would like to receive a paper copy of this by calling the office on 01392 355999.

GSA Head Girls’ Conference

One of the highlights of being part of the Head Girl Team is the opportunity to attend the Head Girls’ Conference, this year held at Haberdashers School for Girls in Monmouth. After an early departure from Exeter St. Davids, we headed North (pretty much the only option from Devon!).

GSA Head Girls’ ConferenceAfter managing to squeeze in hot chocolates and Danish pastries at a rather spectacular coffee shop at Bristol Temple Meads between changing trains, we safely arrived at the Hogwarts lookalike. The first guest speaker was Clare Connor OBE, a former runner up to Zara Phillips for Sports Personality of the Year. As an England cricketer, she captained the team for 6 years, including for their first ashes victory for over 50 years. Clare gave an inspirational talk about the benefits of teamwork, relating it to her outstanding career as a professional cricketer as well as excelling in her work as a coordinator and administrator for a local school.

The afternoon consisted of an interactive talk with one of the teachers of the school, with whom we discussed the necessary qualities of a good leader and the different leadership styles within each Head Girl Team. An enjoyable task was discovering our own leadership strengths and we were pleased to find that the styles within our team all differed, but complemented each other to produce what we hope to be a balanced and effective group.

The day gave us a great insight into the work of other Head Girls and the structure of their prefect and house systems. It was an excellent opportunity to find out useful tips about being in a role of responsibility as well as passing on some of out own.

The train ride home was far livelier as we discussed the ideas from other schools and how we could incorporate them within Maynard to develop our existing qualities.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs. Wilks and Ms. Hughes for giving us the opportunity for such a valuable experience.
