Georgina Daugherty (U5P) has beaten off stiff competition to gain a work experience placement at the World Bank in Washington DC, an organisation that is a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries around the globe. Georgina won a £500 bursary from Connexions to help fund the trip in July. To apply for the bursary she had to fill out an application from in December and go for a mock interview in January. Georgina was then chosen to present her case to judges earlier this month. She is one of twelve young people in Devon and Cornwall to receive the prize.
Georgina said “I am very excited and really thrilled I have got it, it’s just such a great organisation. I am really looking forward to it. This will be an amazing opportunity for me. I am interested in how the world works, especially recently with the credit crunch, and in how we might develop economically. I am very interested in how governments are run and how money is run. My Dad’s South African and I have been to South Africa and seen all the poverty there, that affected me and I have always wanted to try and do something to help. Working at the World Bank is ideal for me”.
Georgina will spend one week working in the urban development department, focusing on climate change. She will have to write a report about climate change and what cities can do to become more environmentally friendly at the end of the week.
