Life After School day

On their first day back after their AS exams the Lower 6th attended a “Life After School day” which consisted of a number of team building and problem solving activities. Seven trainers from outside school kindly gave up their time to help the girls with cv’s, job applications and interview practice. The girls found the day very useful as well as good fun and it gave them plenty to think about concerning their role in a group, body language and how to present themselves to the best advantage both on paper and in real life.

Deputy Head Ann Boyce to Retire After 35 Years

Ann BoyceMrs Ann Boyce, Deputy Head at The Maynard School, will be retiring at the end of this term after exceptional service to the Maynard for over 35 years.

Ann began her career in 1973, when she joined the Maynard as a young Biology teacher. She taught Biology to many generations of Maynardians. In 1988 she became Head of Sixth Form. Ann took on the role of Deputy Head just two years later in 1990, remaining in the post for twenty years. In this role she has overseen the creation of the timetable each year, made various curriculum changes guided newly qualified teachers and even inducted two headmistresses into their roles!

On her retirement Ann will continue to be an Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) Inspector, something she has undertaken for several years. She is also keen to travel and develop her talents in photography. Mrs Tricia Wilks, the current Head of Sixth Form at the Maynard, will take on the role of Deputy Head from September 2010. Her main responsibilities will be to oversee the Pastoral Care and Guidance system, support trainee teachers and coordinate the professional development of staff.

Ann has been an excellent professional in the many roles she has had here. She is an outstanding teacher and a knowledgeable and highly effective pastoral support co-ordinator. Ann has been a superb role model and inspiration to many trainee teachers who start their careers at the Maynard fully secure in the highly quality induction and training they receive under her guidance. Perhaps her most significant contribution over the years at the Maynard has been her commitment to and support of the young people. She has spent many hours working with the girls to help them through the challenges of growing up, and is highly respected.

Good luck Ann, you will be greatly missed!

U3 Entertain Residents From The Lodge

Last month U3 held a tea-party at the Maynard for the residents of The Lodge here in St Leonards.

U3 ENTERTAIN RESIDENTS FROM THE LODGEIt was good fun for everyone and included tea and homemade cakes, biscuits, muffins, cupcakes and scones for our guests and of course us!

Also the girls put on the most wonderful array of different acts for the guests. For an hour all that could be heard in the main school hall was the laughter and glee of everyone there.

All the guests I spoke to said that they completely enjoyed it and are looking forward to coming again next year.

I would like to give special thanks to all the tutors in U3 for helping us to arrange this event and say well done to all the girls for serving, helping and entertaining our guests.

The U3 discover what it means to be British!

After their examinations the U3s were treated to two days of something rather different from their normal lessons. Several departments collaborated to provide a range of activities designed to help the girls really understand ‘What it means to be British’.

They investigated why it took the early humans no less than eight attempts to colonise prehistoric Britain. They found out how the language we speak is actually the end-product of waves of immigration and conquest through the centuries.

They baked scones and learned about the history and etiquette of the British Tea. They discovered the history that lies beneath their feet as they walked around and underneath Exeter and questioned a Roman legionary and a Norman Sheriff. Finally, they had the chance to explore the experience and contribution of some of the different immigrant groups who have come to this country in the 20th century by trying to argue their way past a rather intimidating immigration officer.

Animation fun for Upper One!

Animation fun for Upper One!On Wednesday 9th June, Upper One came off timetable to embark on a creative day of animation! Having already taken part in ‘Ánimation Exeter’, the girls had lots of ideas on how to create their own short piece of animation using laptops, cameras and their own art work. Each group was given a start and end scene and then had to create the scenery and story to fit. After a hard days work, each group’s animated piece was combined to create a combined class story.

L5 Astronomy Visit

L5 Astronomy VisitOn the evening of 20th May, the L5 undertook some extensive Physics research. Firstly, they studied momentum and collisions by going tenpin bowling. Next they studied the thermal properties of cheese by eating Pizza. Finally they visited the Norman Lockyer Observatory at Sidmouth where they were able to use large telescopes to view the moon, Saturn and Venus. They also experienced the superb planetarium there. The observatory visit linked to their current GCSE studies on the use of telescopes to study the universe. We all had an amazing time and were even able to celebrate Katie New’s birthday with a cake and a song at Pizza Hut.

Biology Olympiad

Every year, the brightest students up and down the UK take the Biology Olympiad challenge. It is a three hour exam going well beyond the A level curriculum. We are very pleased to announce that this year Sammi Rosser and Venetia D’Arcy both gained Bronze medals, Lottie Ashford was highly commended and Chloe Kelsey was commended. They are all in our U6 and currently working hard for their A levels in Biology.

Junior Mathematics Challenge, April 2010 United Kingdom Mathematics Trust

In April all of the Lower 4 and Upper 3 took part in this year’s Mathematics Challenge. Nearly half of the entrants have gained an award which is excellent. The paper consisted of 25 multiple choice questions that required a variety of problem-solving techniques in their solution and were not at all straight-forward.

Congratulations to all of you that have been awarded a certificate and a special mention to Kavisha Mandalia in Lower 4 who has a gold certificate and achieved the best result in the school.
