Sixth Form
The Maynard has given me some of the happiest times of my life, and the biggest opportunities
The Maynard Sixth form is a vibrant, friendly community, where everyone is encouraged to achieve highly.
Sixth formers enjoy considerable independence in planning their own study, and are based in the Sixth Form Centre, with space for individual study, excellent computer provision, a common room with kitchen, Sixth Form classrooms and tutor offices.
Each year we are thrilled to see our students achieving their full potential, and moving on to the university or career of their choice.
One of The Maynard Sixth Form’s key strengths is the wide variety of opportunities on offer. We cater for a full range of AS and A2 subjects (22 in total), and offer free choice of the subjects studied, and retain a friendly, family atmosphere, with each girl receiving individual attention and support from our tutors. At The Maynard we also offer the AQA Baccalaureate, available to any student in the Sixth Form. The AQA Bacc. is a complete curriculum programme, adding value to core A-level subjects through broader study, the Extended Project Qualification and enrichment activities. It provides valuable preparation for study at university.
Being a girls-only Sixth Form enables students to develop their leadership skills and to celebrate learning without social distractions. Research from the Girls’ School Association (GSA) shows that girls in single-sex schools obtain a considerably higher percentage of A grades than girls in other
sectors in nearly every subject. They are also more likely to choose
A level subjects which have traditionally been the preserve of boys,
such as Science and Mathematics.
The Sixth Form programme is designed to help students develop new skills that they will need to cope successfully with work at A-level, university and the workplace. In addition to their exam subjects, Sixth Formers enjoy a unique Extension Studies Programme, offering diverse subjects such as car maintenance, philosophy, politics and cookery for students. They play a full part in all school activities and are actively encouraged to balance academic study with extra-curricular activities.
