Girls go Gold
Student charity concert – Friday 2 July – 7.30pm
In July three of us from U6 will be travelling to Ghana to work in an orphanage and we hope to be able to raise enough money to take some resources out with us. The local children lack basic items such as toothbrushes, first aid kits and painkillers.
To help raise money we are holding a concert in Main School Hall at 7:30pm on Friday 2nd July to which you are warmly invited. Performers will include students from Maynard as well as some outside guests. Tickets will cost £5 (£2 for students) and will include a complementary drink. Other light refreshments will be available.
Any funds raised from the concert will also go towards projects set up by the organisation ‘Original Volunteers’ with which we are working, which include the building and decoration of schools. Money is also needed to pay for school fees and national insurance cards for children, allowing them discounted healthcare.
We really hope that you will be able to join us and support this worthy cause.
Thank you
Sophie Whitehall, Caroline Clements, Toni Mattos

The Maynard to host the annual GSA South West Region Head Girls’ Conference, Tuesday 30 September 2010
The Maynard School is delighted to be holding the annual GSA South West Head Girls’ Conference this year on 30 September.
The theme of the conference will be ‘The Courage of Leadership’ and we are delighted to welcome Motivational Speaker, Leadership and Team Coach Rebecca Stephens MBE. Rebecca was the first British woman to climb Everest and the Seven Summits. In addition we have a panel of inspirational women attending: Sally Walters, Old Maynardian and recent Young Woman Engineer of the Year and Karen Bates, an Associate Partner at Foot Anstey Law Firm who, along with Rebecca Stevens will work with the girls on various leadership themed workshops.
When speaking of the upcoming conference Headmistress Bee Hughes said “We are delighted to welcome over 80 young women leaders from across the South West who have the opportunity to think about the demands of leadership, debate issues and learn more about the skills of being an effective leadership.”
Jobs for the Girls – A Careers Fair with a difference Tuesday 14 October 2010
Following on from the success of last year’s Alternative Careers Fair ‘Jobs for the Girls’ we are delighted to announce that ‘Jobs for the Girls’ will be taking place once again this October. Open to all girls in Exeter and beyond, for Years 8-10.
If conventional women’s careers don’t do it for you, be sure to visit Exeter’s only careers fair dedicated to girls who want to defy stereotypes and stand out from the crowd.
This careers fair brings together professional women from an inspiring
variety of traditionally male jobs to share their stories and talk about the opportunities out there that too many girls are missing out on.
– Hear about real experiences in exciting and rewarding careers
– Meet careers services advisers and professional industry bodies
– Learn about education and training needed for particular careers
We can’t pretend that there isn’t a gap in pay and prospects between the sexes. 67% of women aged 16–24 said they would have considered other careers if they had known about the inequality. You still have a choice. By avoiding the stereotypical women’s jobs, you’ll find that things can be fair for the fairer sex.
