Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is a fantastic vehicle to stand out from the crowd and is nationally recognised by universities and potential employers as a valuable personal and social qualification. Here at The Maynard, we consider it one of the most important extra-curricular challenges available, whilst also making a difference to other peoples’ lives, and we actively encourage our girls to take part.

At Bronze level the award comprises four sections: skills, volunteering, physical and expedition. Girls are expected to serve others, acquire new practical skills, develop physical recreation interests and experience the adventure of expeditions (2 days and 1 night).

At Silver level the award comprises 4 sections: volunteering, physical, skills and expedition. Girls complete at least 6 months’ volunteering and a minimum of 6 months on either Physical or Skills and 3 months on the other. The expedition section involves planning, training for and doing a 3 day (2 night) expedition.

At Gold level the award comprises five sections: skills, volunteering, physical, expedition and residential. For the volunteering sections girls are able to assist with community service or become involved in charity fundraising activities at school although many find alternative volunteering opportunities elsewhere.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme allows students to gain valuable skills and create incredible experiences whilst encouraging teamwork, charity and social interaction. We are proud of the fact that so many of our students successfully complete some or all of the levels here at The Maynard.
