Mathematics

Setting high standards in the learning experience of our students goes hand in hand with creating and maintaining a colourful learning environment, incorporating challenging activities within our teaching and using stimulating resources. Maths is far from boring at The Maynard!

Our students are encouraged to participate in a range of opportunities including

  • United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Challenges
  • Devon Team Mathematical Challenges
  • Royal Institution Masterclasses at the University of Exeter
  • One-day conference ‘Mathematics is your future!’
  • One-day conference ‘Let Maths take you further!’

Through these, our students can be extended mathematically, encouraged to think ahead about their choices and careers and also be helped to develop an appreciation of Mathematics that is not necessarily related to curriculum and exams.

From Year 7 – Year 9 we use a range of resources to encourage mental maths skills and correct, precise and orderly spoken and written mathematics, using of homework as an integral part of the learning. The overall aim is to give all students the opportunity to develop to their full potential.

The Mathematics IGCSE course aims to enable students to:

  • Comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.
  • Develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts.
  • Acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems.
  • Reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences and draw conclusions.

Topics covered include all aspects of numerical calculation, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, data handling and applications of Mathematics.

The Mathematics team at The Maynard know that confidence in using mathematical skills, together with analytical thinking and logical deduction, is needed today in many fields of work: mathematical skills which go beyond GCSE can greatly help your study in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, ICT, Psychology, Geography and Economics.

Our outstanding results are a reflection of our commitment and extreme dedication to teaching. Our students make the most of being taught in small groups and take full advantage of the resources, care and support available to them.

All our Mathematics Sixth Formers are encouraged to embrace opportunities to broaden their Mathematical understanding and experience outside lessons. They are strongly encouraged to read extensively around the subject and a selection of suitable books are offered throughout the course. We attend annually the one-day conference “Let Maths take you Further” with our Year 12 students: this has proved popular and valuable in helping them make informed decisions and in considering a future career. All Mathematics students take part in the Senior Mathematics Challenge.

Meet Dr Henderson, Head of Mathematics

Dr Henderson is the Head of Mathematics at The Maynard School. He read Mathematics at Durham University before completing a PhD at the University of East Anglia, specialising in Model Theory, a branch of Mathematical Logic.

After working professionally as a theatre director, he returned to education and completed his PGCE at the University of Buckingham. He is passionate about his subject and committed to promoting mathematical confidence and curiosity in all students.

Beyond the classroom, he contributes widely to school life and enjoys exploring the best of Devon with his family – from beach days to walks on Dartmoor.
