Computing at The Maynard School

The Maynard School is continually striving to be a centre of technological excellence, fostering innovation to prepare students for an ever-changing future. We remain committed to nurturing students’ individual interests and consistently encourage them to extend their learning beyond the formal curriculum. This is achieved through the support of student-led artificial intelligence groups, the delivery of staff training initiatives, and engagement with external organisations to inspire and motivate learners.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a department that is shaping the future impact of girls’ engagement in technology and STEM.

Working in close partnership with IT support services, the school ensures that students are provided with up to date, high quality resources that effectively support teaching and learning. As a Microsoft School, The Maynard School is committed to the regular and strategic use of key platforms, including SharePoint, Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft Office suite, to enhance both classroom practice and wider school operations.

At Key Stage 3, students follow a structured and progressive curriculum that develops core competencies in digital literacy, programming concepts, computational thinking, networks and e-safety. This is designed to provide a strong foundation in both theoretical understanding and practical application, as well as preparation for GCSE study. Options are selected in Year 9, with Computer Science remaining a popular choice. Students who opt for the subject go on to study the OCR J277 GCSE in Computer Science, beginning in Year 10 and continuing through to the end of Year 11, where they develop advanced knowledge of computational thinking, programming, and computer systems. At A level, pupils study OCR H446 Computer Science.

The department also supports a range of extra-curricular opportunities designed to encourage students’ interest and confidence in Computing beyond the classroom. These include a LEGO FIRST League club, which runs three times per week and gives pupils the opportunity to develop skills in robotics, teamwork, problem-solving and innovation. In addition, the department offers GCSE coding support clubs for students who wish to further develop their programming skills, consolidate classroom learning and build confidence in preparation for their GCSE Computer Science examinations.
