House System

Our House System builds on this foundation, creating meaningful connections across the year groups. Through house collaborations, competitions and shared experiences, girls form lasting friendships, support one another through successes and challenges, and develop confidence, teamwork and leadership skills that last well beyond their school years.

Established in the early 20th century, The Maynard houses are named after historic trade guilds – organisations that once played a vital role in maintaining standards within skilled trades across the UK. These guilds also supported apprentices and provided financial assistance to members’ families. Many still exist today, now focusing largely on charitable and educational work.

Armourers

Makers of armour and metalworkers, later closely associated with the armed forces; the guild still supports research into materials science.

Goldsmiths

Responsible for the quality of precious metals and coinage; today they promote excellence in science education.

Haberdashers

Traditionally sellers of small goods such as ribbons, gloves and hats; now strong supporters of education.

Merchants

Traders who exported English cloth and imported goods from abroad, with historic roots beyond London.

New students are allocated their House once their place at the school has been accepted. This ensures that every girl becomes part of her house community from the very beginning, providing an immediate sense of identity, support and belonging as she joins The Maynard.
