Music
A variety of ensembles cater to different skill levels, providing the girls with ample opportunities to perform and collaborate. Regular concerts are held in school and at local venues (such as Exeter Cathedral and the Barnfield Theatre), showcasing the diverse talents of our students and fostering a sense of community and achievement.
Individual lessons are a cornerstone of our offerings, delivered by experienced and dedicated musicians who tailor their teaching to each student’s needs. Our well-resourced facilities include a suite of practice rooms and a bank of iPads, enabling students to explore composing with GarageBand alongside Sibelius software.
Ours is a hugely dynamic and supportive musical environment where creativity and excellence flourish. Discover the joy of music with us and let your talent shine!
Junior Ensembles
Junior Choir
Students can join the Junior Choir from Year 3 up. We focus on the joy of singing, and also love singing in two parts with a performing arts feel, so lots of dance routines and actions!
Ukuladies
We have a 20-strong ukulele orchestra who play a range of different music, from Sea Shanties to Neil Diamond to George Ezra. Students learn to sing and play at the same time as well as how to create a professional looking performance.
Recorder Group
Open to Years 4 to 7, this group starts with learning the recorder basics on the descant recorder and builds up to learning the alto and tenor (larger) recorders in parts and harmony.
Singing Assemblies
Monday is Junior Singing Assembly and Tuesday is Pre-Prep singing assembly, where we learn the hymn of the week but also a range of different songs, in rounds or in harmony.
Senior Ensembles
Orchestra
The school orchestra features our more advanced instrumentalists and enjoys playing music ranging from Rossini to the latest blockbuster film scores.
Chamber Orchestra
This is a string orchestra for players of Grade 5+ standard. They love nothing better than a lunchtime spent playing composers such as Mozart and Telemann!
MCO (Maynard Chamber Orchestra)
This lively ensemble is often the first group that instrumentalists get to play in. It is for players of all ages that are of Grade 1 – 4 standard. We are often heard performing music from Disney films!
Senior Choir
This group is for anyone who enjoys singing or wants to give it a go. They particularly enjoy singing songs from the charts and musicals.
Chamber Choir
This choir is for our older and more advanced singers. They enjoy singing music in 3 or 4 parts and are kept busy, performing in many concerts throughout the year.
Middle School Choir
A chance for anyone in Years 7 and 8 to develop their vocal skills. Every performance is toe-tapping and delivered with a smile!
Jazz Band
This group likes to have fun! Performing classic jazz standards to Stevie Wonder and the music of Rick Astley, the jazz band (and their colourful hats) frequently bring our concerts to a rousing finale.
Chamber Music
This largely depends on the musicians we have in school who would like to develop their skills even further. We currently have a wind trio and string quartet whilst in the past we have had saxophone and flute quartets.
Individual Music Tuition
We can arrange lessons for a range of different instruments with our talented and experienced peripatetic teachers.
Lessons are timetabled on a rota system and are generally 30 minutes in length. Lessons can vary in length according to the standard of the pupil with 20 minute lessons available for the beginner and longer lessons for more advanced students.
The school has a number of instruments for hire at £25 per term. For all enquiries about individual music tuition, please contact our Director of Music and Performing Arts, Miss Angela Blackwell, on [email protected] or 01392 273417.
Parents should note that half a term’s notice to visiting music teachers in writing is required should they wish to terminate individual instrumental lessons or change teachers within the department. If this is not received, half a term’s fees will be charged in lieu of notice.
