Leadership Opportunities

We are proud to offer an exceptional range of leadership opportunities that empower our students to develop confidence, initiative, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Central to our ethos is the belief that young women should have every opportunity to discover their voice and take the lead. From Junior School upwards, girls are encouraged to step forward, speak up and shape their world through meaningful roles such as Student Council representatives, sports captains, committee or club leaders, Young Enterprise innovators and community ambassadors.

Supported by a culture that values pupil voice and responsibility, our leadership pathways are embedded across academic, co-curricular and service programmes – whether organising one of our many charity initiatives, leading teams in the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Ten Tors, or championing peer wellbeing. This commitment to nurturing confident, articulate, compassionate leaders is central to who we are and ensures that Maynardians leave the school gates not just academically accomplished, but equipped with the resilience, initiative and ethical conviction to thrive and make a difference in the wider world.

Leadership opportunities across the years

Students can begin taking on leadership roles as early as Year 1, expanding in both range and responsibility as they progress through the school.

Junior School

• Student Council (Years 1-6)
Representatives are chosen each term and meet weekly to share ideas and make positive changes around school. Recent endeavours have included designing a Welcome booklet for new students and collaborating with the Maynard Parents’ Association to allocate funding to a variety of school improvement projects.

• Form Captains (Years 1-6)
Form Captains are selected each term to help their class run smoothly. They might hand out and collect resources, take care of classroom equipment and sensibly lead their class to somewhere else in school.

• Buddying with Younger Pupils
Older students become buddies to our younger Maynardians, enjoying activities such as reading together or spending time together at break times.

• Taster Day Buddies
Students help to welcome girls visiting for Taster Days, showing them around and making sure they feel happy and included.

• Tour Guides for Open Events
Confident and friendly students in Year 6 (and Year 5 in the summer term) act as tour guides, proudly showing visitors around our school.

And as our Junior students prepare for their exciting move to the Senior School, they enjoy a range of special opportunities designed to further build their independence and confidence, while also allowing them to shine as inspirational role models for their younger peers.

• House Captains (Year 6)
Our Year 6 House Captains are chosen each term to represent their House at events and during the highly anticipated House Cup presentation in assembly.

• Leading Assemblies (Year 6)
Year 6 students can volunteer to lead a Junior School assembly on a topic they feel passionate about. They create a PowerPoint presentation to inspire others and raise awareness of important ideas.

• Leading a Lunchtime Club (Year 6)
Year 6 students can apply to run a fun lunchtime club for younger pupils, sharing their interests and helping others try something new.

• Fair Trade Chocolate Stall (Year 6)
Year 6 students help run the popular Fair Trade chocolate stall every Friday – a tasty way to learn about teamwork and responsibility!

Senior School

• Tutor House Captains
Tutor House Captains are enthusiastic ambassadors for their House, helping to lead and promote House events throughout the year. They play a key role in building House spirit, encouraging participation, and fostering a positive sense of identity, pride, and friendly competition among students.

• Maynard Community
Representatives for Maynard Community are approachable, welcoming, and actively involved in school life. They help strengthen connections across the school by supporting events, initiatives, and everyday interactions, ensuring that the community remains inclusive, supportive, and thriving.

• School Council
School Council members act as student representatives who share ideas, feedback, and perspectives on behalf of their peers. They work collaboratively with staff to reflect on the school’s vision, contribute to decision-making, and help shape how the school is run for the benefit of all students.

• Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
EDI representatives are passionate advocates for fairness, respect, and belonging. They promote awareness of diversity, support inclusive practices, and help ensure that every student feels valued, heard, and able to be their authentic self within the school community.

• Mentors/Buddies
Mentors or Buddies are older students who offer guidance, reassurance, and friendship to younger students or those new to the school. By sharing their experiences and being a friendly, familiar face, they help others feel supported and confident as they begin or continue their Maynard journey.

• Sports Captains
Sports Captains are positive role models and leaders within school sport. They help motivate their teams, encourage teamwork and sportsmanship, and support participation across the wide range of sports offered, both in training and competition.

• Volunteers
Volunteers contribute their time and energy to a wide variety of opportunities across the school. From helping run clubs and competitions to supporting fundraising events and school outreach, student volunteers play an important role in enriching school life and making a meaningful difference in the wider community.

Sixth Form

• House Captains
House Captains are enthusiastic ambassadors for their House, helping to lead and promote House events throughout the year. They play a key role in building House spirit, encouraging participation, and fostering a positive sense of identity, pride, and friendly competition among students.

• Debating
There are many opportunities to practice debating and lead a team to provide well-evidenced arguments for a specific viewpoint, whether in lessons or as an optional ESP module. This in turn fosters confidence, public speaking ability and careful decision-making – all important for broader leadership roles.

• Academic Mentoring Scheme
Sixth Form Maynard mentors regularly coach GCSE students in other local schools, giving them a brilliant revision boost in time for their big exams while also consolidating their own knowledge to support their A-level study. Each mentor takes the lead and organises short bespoke lessons for the mentee, and the scheme has proved very enriching for all parties involved!

The Sixth Formers’ weekly Chocolate and Chat club with Upper 3 (Year 7) students is a fan favourite!

• Working with the Junior School
A subset of Sixth Form volunteers spend regular time over in the Junior School helping with many aspects of school life, from reading with the younger students and running extra spelling or maths interventions to taking the lead on a range of lunchtime and after school clubs. They are consistently outstanding role models for their Junior School friends.
