A big day for fans of all things maths – Saturday was both #InternationalDayOfMathematics and #PiDay!
➕➖ Our Pre-Prep and Junior mini mathematicians had to STOP what they were doing at five different times throughout the day on Thursday to do a super speedy maths challenge – two of which were also sent to parents to join in the fun! Students have also been tasked with finding ‘maths in the wild’ and taking a selfie… and just look at a few of the brilliant examples from staff!
✖️➗ And on Friday, Senior School had a very hap-pi Pi Day, taking part in challenges ranging from a pi digit recital competition (some entrants reaching over 200 digits!), pi-themed creative writing and guessing pi dingbats, to working out French words that sound like pi through drawings/charades, approximating pi using random numbers in Computing, explaining concepts in Economics with the acronym PIES… the list goes on! And all topped off with pi-themed lunch and dessert!
Students of all ages have had enormous fun taking part, but just as importantly, making maths exciting from a young age fosters a genuine long-lasting enjoyment of the subject, the benefits of which are crystal clear in our results: in 2025, 64% achieved a Grade 7+ at GCSE and 84% a Grade A*/A at A-level, more than triple and double the national average respectively. This in turn opens the door to a huge number of career options, and over 50% of our leavers pursue STEM subjects at university, rewriting the narrative that mathematics and science are ‘for boys’.
Events like this are so much fun and also have a massively long-reaching positive impact: a very satisfying sum indeed!
