Having won the regional round of the UK Space Design Competition in November, a team of our outstanding STEM students took it to the next level last weekend by competing in the National Finals at Imperial College – the Maynard’s second consecutive year reaching this stage!
Approximately 200 students competed in finals, from a total of over 1000 who began in the regionals. Our team joined forces with students from five other schools to form the Condor company, competing against three other companies in a design challenge titled ‘Apollo’s Brace’. Set in 2046, the companies were tasked with designing a lunar base, providing a centre for research and a garden city for tourism.
After an intense day of collaboration on Saturday, the team worked late into the evening to meet their 8AM Sunday presentation deadline, then presented to a panel of expert judges: they chose the Shackleton crater, situated near the South Pole of the Moon, for their ambitious lunar base, placing their garden city under a vast transparent dome spanning the crater. Although they weren’t the overall winners, they still hugely impressed the judges with a fascinating and comprehensive presentation that addressed every aspect of the brief.
Huge congratulations to the team for their unwavering effort and for smashing the task at hand! The stars really are the limit for them!
