We loved hosting the Exeter heat of the Historical Association’s Great Debate on Tuesday, welcoming talented public speakers from other nearby schools and expert judges for a fascinating evening of all things history. All three Maynard speakers absolutely excelled, and – for the second year in a row! – we have a Maynardian through to the semifinals, this time superstar Eve, Lower 6 (Year 12)!
We caught up with her after her stellar performance:
“Each of us had to answer the question, ‘How important are personal and public records as evidence for explaining the story, or stories, of your local area?’ My great great grandfather kept a diary in WWI, so I decided to do my speech about that, also linking in public records like newspaper obituaries.
“What I loved about this experience is that I learned something new every time someone gave a speech. Rose and Tula (fellow Maynard speakers) were absolutely fantastic. I really wish there had been more spots in the semifinal because they were just amazing!”
Now, she’ll be sending off a recording of her speech to the Historical Association with the hope of reaching the finals – and she’s already had great support from last year’s finalist, Rosie (now Upper 6, Year 13).
Huge congratulations to Eve and everyone who took part, and a big thank you to our wonderful judges and staff!
