Jess and Shweta excel in Intermediate Mathematical Challenge

Posted on March 20, 2017

Following excellent results and a gold certificate in February’s UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, Jess Carr (Upper 5) and Shweta Banerjee (Upper 4) qualified to join an elite group of young mathematicians in the next round of the Challenge, which took place on Thursday 16 March.

Over 250,000 students from more than 3,000 schools and colleges across the UK took part in the first round in which students had one hour to answer 25 multiple-choice mathematical problems. Only the top 500 from each year group then qualify to take part in the ensuing Olympiad paper and that Jess and Shweta scored so highly to be amongst these is a fantastic achievement, marking them as two of the best pupils in the entire UK.

A further 26 students from Upper 4 (Year 9) to Upper 5 (Year 11) were awarded bronze or silver medals in what was a very successful competition for The Maynard.

We look forward to hearing about how Jess and Shweta fared in the second round of the competition – the results will be published in the next few weeks.
