Science
‘...standing on the shoulders of giants.’ Once said by Isaac Newton but also true of Science at the Maynard School. Building on many years of successful teaching, our curriculum is exciting, challenging and innovative across all key stages.
We encourage participation in a broad range of extra-curricular activities. From Science Club and CREST awards for Key Stage 3 (Year 7 – 9), through egg races, participation at Chemistry Camps and Top of the Bench competitions at Key Stages 3 and 4 (Years 7 – 11) to Olympiad competitions, egg races and the Science Reading group at Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form); we encourage our students to develop inquiring and analytical minds.
The separate disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught from Upper 3 (Year 7 / 8). Girls progress on to GCSEs in AQA Triple Science (Years 9 - 11). Our A Levels, our style of teaching aims to convey the excitement of contemporary science by placing it in the context of its practical applications. Students find the courses academically challenging but above all engaging.
Our students too are “giants”. Their achievements over many years have been outstanding, at both GCSE and A Level. About 50% of our Sixth Form students choose to do at least one Science A Level and they progress on to a variety of demanding careers, including Architecture, Biochemistry, Engineering, Medicine and Veterinary Science.
