Inspirational Female Scientists

During lockdown many of our students have spent some of their Science lessons undertaking research and producing projects in the form of posters. All of us in the Science Department were impressed with both the pupils’ enthusiasm and the quality of their finished posters.

The theme for the Lower 4 project was “An Inspirational Female Scientist” (a theme that is close to our hearts at The Maynard!). The girls were required to choose a female scientist, research their life and achievements, and explain why their chosen scientist inspires them. It was particularly difficult to judge the “Inspirational Female Scientist” entries because the quality of the projects was exceptionally high (even for The Maynard!). After much deliberation it was decided that Annabel’s poster about Marie Curie was the winning entry and Kristina’s poster about Mae Jemison was awarded second place. Joint third went to Harleigh’s poster about Marie Curie, India’s poster about Ada Lovelace, Isabel’s poster about Wangari Maathai and Millie’s poster about Ada Lovelace. The explanations that these girls gave for why their chosen scientist inspires them, inspired us. Indeed, it is exciting to think that some of these students will one day themselves be at the forefront of scientific endeavour.
