We at The Maynard School are delighted to be running the first-ever ‘Fastest Teacher in the South West’ competition in partnership with the Devon, Cornwall and Somerset Schools Athletic associations, now with a new category recognising teachers serving as fantastic inspirations and role models for their students.
Two more free places in the final – held as part of The Balmy Bicton 10K race in July – have been reserved for teachers with particularly inspirational stories behind their entry.
While other places will be allocated based on the fastest times submitted to The Maynard website, the ‘Inspirational Teacher’ category will focus instead on the entrant’s backstory, which we will share on social media in order to inspire the next generation of runners.
“It’s so positive to see entries coming in from teachers of all levels of fitness and with different motivations for taking part,” says Liz Gregory, Head at The Maynard and an accomplished runner in her own right.
“We’re grateful to have the likes of the 2022 World Aquathlon Champion, a guide runner for Sydney Paralympian and triple medalist, Tracey Hinton, and the winner of the recent Exeter Half Marathon, but this new category will really highlight remarkable achievements (both fitness and otherwise), adversities overcome or just simply celebrate a truly beloved teacher.”
The most inspiring submissions will be shortlisted and posted to The Maynard School social media accounts on Saturday 8th June. Parents, schools, and the wider community will be able to vote for the teacher of their choice by interacting with the post before Sunday 16th June, with winners boasting the most interactions being announced on ‘Thank a Teacher Day’, Wednesday 19th June.
HOW TO ENTER
Teachers of any running ability are encouraged to enter on The Maynard School’s website – www.maynard.co.uk – where you can also look up all the other runners so far. The fastest or most inspirational men and women will be invited to attend the live final at The Balmy Bicton 10K race on Sunday 7th July 2024, with places pre-booked and paid for by The Maynard. Winners will take home prizes and that all-important title of ‘The Fastest Teacher in the South West’.
